Calcium stearate is a calcium soap and a carboxylate salt of calcium. It is made by heating calcium oxide and stearic acid. It is a component of many foodstuffs, lubricants, and surfactants. It is also the main component of soap scum, which forms when soap is mixed with hard water. 

Calcium stearate is insoluble in water and does not lather well. It is sold commercially as a spray dried powder or as a 50% dispersion in water. As a food additive, it is known by the generic E number E470.
